Highlights and themes

Overcoming adversity

Remi spoke candidly about overcoming his obstacles through determination and hard work.

I grew up in the Bronx, a very rough neighbourhood, especially in the 80s and 90s. Despite the challenges, I realized that there is more. I can be better, I can do better. There is more within me.

Mentorship and support

Remi highlighted the pivotal role of mentors in his life, drawing parallels to the support provided by Beat the Streets.

I had one person who believed in me, the recruiter. She saw something in me that I didn’t even see in myself. And these Beat the Streets instructors and leaders, they see so much in the youth that these kids don’t see in themselves.

Resilience and perseverance

Remi described the intense training and the mental and physical challenges he endured to become a Navy SEAL.

The fire, the burning desire within me to be a SEAL, fueled me every single day. It was that resilience that got me through the toughest times.

Impact of Beat the Streets

Remi praised Beat the Streets for empowering youth, emphasizing the program's role in helping young people build confidence and resilience.

Programs like Beat the Streets are essential. They provide the guidance and support that can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.
