Empowering girls through wrestling: Beat the Streets sponsors Wrestle Like a Girl event
Through Beat the Streets, we are committed to advancing the education of low-income children and youth through the sport of wrestling. Our mission also aims to create inclusive spaces that empower girls to thrive both on and off the mat.
Canada has a rich history of women excelling in wrestling, like Leah Ferguson, Gen Morrison and Carol Huynh, trailblazers who led this incredible camp. Their expertise and passion for impacting girls shows what’s possible when women lead and inspire.
Beat the Streets is grateful to have had the opportunity to support the Wrestle Like a Girl Camp.
A weekend of growth and resilience
From the organizers:
“I felt strong and supported leaving the Wrestle Like a Girl camp.”
From January 2 to 3, 2025, Wrestle Like a Girl hosted a girls’ wrestling camp in Calgary. The camp focused on resilience – both on and off the mat. Designed to cultivate strength, confidence, and community, it brought together 100 athletes and 27 coaches from across Canada, including BC, Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Newfoundland.
The camp emphasized that resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about growing stronger through adversity. Athletes and coaches connected with peers, learned from women wrestling leaders and embraced a supportive environment that equipped them with the tools to face any challenge.
Key highlights of the camp included:
Four wrestling skill sessions: focusing on adaptability, building support, knowing how to show up, and reframing challenges.
Two mental performance and nutrition sessions: preparing athletes for success beyond the mat.
Four coach-specific sessions: exploring themes like supporting women in coaching, fostering belonging and competency, and reflecting on empowering female athletes.
“I absolutely loved this experience and want to continue to improve my skills in coaching women. Before this course, I thought I knew what I was doing coaching women, and after taking this course, I learned SO much more! I would recommend it to anyone, male or female!”
Celebrating the Wrestle Like a Girl – Coach Edition Workbook
Shaping the future of women in wrestling
The Wrestle Like a Girl Coaching Workbook was unveiled during the camp, offering a powerful resource designed by women for women. With practical tools and inspirational insights, it focuses on creating inclusive environments where female athletes can thrive.
This resource equips coaches with actionable strategies to foster belonging, build resilience, and inspire confidence in athletes. It’s a testament to the commitment of women leaders in wrestling to break barriers and create meaningful change.
