A Legacy of Generosity: Thank You, Christina Mary Hendrie Trust!
At Beat the Streets, we believe in the power of collaboration to change lives. We’re thrilled to announce our partnership with the Christina Mary Hendrie Trust, whose generous support will fund four You Grow Girl programs this year. From November to June, these programs will empower 80 low-income girls (ages 13-18) across Toronto with opportunities to improve physical literacy, build confidence, and foster resilience.
But this isn’t just about delivering programs – it’s about celebrating a legacy of compassion and commitment that has touched countless lives across Scotland and Canada.
A Legacy That Inspires
The Christina Mary Hendrie Trust story is as unique as it is inspiring. It begins with a war veteran, Murray Hendrie, who was granted a seemingly “worthless” piece of land in Northern Ontario after serving in South Africa’s Boer War. Decades later, that land was discovered to hold rich deposits of zinc, copper, and silver – turning an overlooked inheritance into a remarkable opportunity for philanthropy.
In 1972, Murray’s niece, Christina Mary Hendrie, established the Trust in her will, dedicating her estate to supporting charities that uplift youth, older people, and veterans. Over the past 50 years, the Christina Mary Hendrie Trust has funded over 1,000 charities, embodying a steadfast commitment to creating positive change.
Supporting Vulnerable Communities
The Christina Mary Hendrie Trust focuses on providing meaningful support to some of society’s most vulnerable groups: youth, older people, and veterans. Their mission is rooted in the belief that uplifting these groups strengthens entire communities.
By funding initiatives in Canada and Scotland, the Trust helps charities create tangible, life-changing opportunities. Whether it’s helping young people build resilience, supporting older people to combat isolation, or ensuring veterans receive the care they deserve, their work is driven by compassion and purpose.
Making an Impact with You Grow Girl
With the Trust’s generous funding, Beat the Streets will deliver four You Grow Girl programs at schools across Toronto. Running from November to June, these programs will serve 80 low-income girls and introduce them to engaging activities that inspire physical activity, leadership, and resilience.
Girls participating in You Grow Girl will gain the following:
Improved physical literacy through activities like kickboxing and wrestling.
Boosted confidence as they tackle challenges and discover their strengths.
Resilience to overcome barriers, both in sport and in life.
This partnership also showcases the power of access: by bringing programs directly to schools, we’re breaking down barriers and creating lasting interest in sports among girls. For some schools, our sessions have sparked the formation of new sports teams, amplifying the program’s impact.
Celebrating the Christina Mary Hendrie Trust
We’re deeply grateful for their support of You Grow Girl and for believing in the power of sport to transform lives. Together, we’re proving that every girl has the potential to grow stronger, lead boldly, and thrive in her community.
