Advice for first year post secondary students PT2 (1FIRSTblog of blog series)

First year advice

This year for Beat the Streets, we decided to write a blog series of 6. My blog series will be a student package where I will try to basically touch on all the aspects of a post-secondary student’s life. Like the title says, this blog is for the first year entering post-secondary in September. I decided to write this blog to help ease those students’ transition because life in post-secondary is completely different from life in High school, minus the drama. Last year, I wrote a similar blog which you can also check out.

1.     Get involved, whether it’s in a cub, varsity team, or intramurals. GET INVOLVED!! That’s how you get to meet people with the same interest as you and maybe become great friends.

2.     Have a study buddy or befriend someone in your class. They can be of help if you don’t understand something in the class or missed a day.

3.     Have a hobby, you also get to meet new people with the same interest and make friends and destress.

4.     Save money! We are all broke students, except the ones that are not. So save your money, you do not need that $30 sweater that has your school logo on it. You’ll end up getting it for free anyway.

5.     Take notes. Whether you use a laptop or pen and paper, always take notes. Especially in those classes where the profs don’t use slides (nightmares).

6.     Learn to Manage your time, especially during midterm/ final exam season. One method that I found helped with my time management this summer was the Pomodoro technique. Give it try.

7.     Go to class, remember the school still takes your money whether you attend class or not.

8.     Learn about the services that your school offer. I didn’t know that my school gave us access to word for free until my 4th year so don’t be me.

9.     Not all required courses will be related to your major (boring).

10.  Attend orientation or frosh week. Another way to meet people. Also, lots of fun!!

11. High school and university/college are totally different battlefields, but you’ll get through to it. Remember to always give you 120%.

 12.  Always have a water bottle with you. HYDRATE AND HYDRATE. ALWAYS HYDRATE!!

13.  Always be kind and respectful towards your instructors because you never know, you might need them down the line to give your grade a boost up or to give you a recommendation, or even get a student job in their office.

14.  Sometimes it will get tough, you’ll want to cry and shout. Cry! cry as much as you want but don’t give up, keep going because at the end of it all, the reward will be even greater.

This is the end of my blog advice. Post-secondary is not as difficult as it seems. It’ll be scary at first, being in a new environment and all but you’ll be just fine. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for #2 of my series.
