You Grow Girl program begins for 30 girls at Loretto Abbey Secondary School
You Grow Girl is a special program at BTS. It's the first "girl's only” program and was designed with a lot of love and attention.
Why did we design You Grow Girl? Because, as women, there are a lot of things we wished we learned when we were younger, like how to make a healthy decision or how to set boundaries in our relationships. How to get and stay healthy and active.
So we took our unique brand of BTS programming (sports-based development) and combined it with structured and focused activities to develop the social-emotional skills of girls in low-income neighbourhoods.
Normally, You Grow Girl is a 24-hour program (24 x 1-hour classes). To accommodate and reach even more young girls during the pandemic, BTS has adapted the program into 16 x 1-hour classes. And this year, participants will thrive under the instruction of Stephanie Afonso & Coach Neal Ewers.
Stephanie brings with her a wealth of experience as she teaches girls how to box and kickbox while Coach Neal Ewers, former 8th wrestler in the world, will teach social-emotional skills and introductory wrestling lessons to make every girl confident, strong and ready for the next challenge.
With Coaches Stephanie & Neal delivering classes, 30 girls will develop skills in:
Boxing
Kickboxing
Functional Stretching
Wrestling
Goal setting
Building healthy relationships
Stress management
Decision making
Each student will receive 16 hours of learning opportunities (10 hours of physical activity and 6 hours of social-emotional learning).
We are so grateful to Jumpstart for their support in delivering this program again. Last year we had great results, in spite of COVID and restrictions. We are so excited to be sharing this program again, with a wider group, especially in light of some of the feedback we had from last year:
