Empowering low-income youth: wrestling and resiliency-building for a brighter future

Nike Community Impact Fund Gala Beat the Streets Toronto Charity

Kathy Khoa & Arely Torales accept this generous donation on behalf of Beat the Streets at Nike Headquarters in Toronto.

Beat the Streets proudly announces its partnership with Nike through the Nike Community Impact Fund (NCIF), a remarkable initiative to advance the education and development of low-income youth in Toronto.

We are thrilled to collaborate with Nike as we empower low-income youth in Toronto through wrestling and resiliency-building. By providing opportunities for active and healthy lifestyles, we equip young individuals with the tools they need to overcome challenges and unlock their true potential. Together with Nike and our dedicated community partners, we are making a profound difference in the lives of our city's youth.

Unleashing potential with wrestling & resiliency-building:

This partnership allows us to join forces with Nike NCIF, eliminating barriers and creating avenues for low-income youth to experience joy, play, and personal growth.

Nike's $10,000 donation will support two Wrestle 4 Fun after-school programs. This program combines the physical and mental benefits of wrestling with a curriculum designed to foster resiliency and life skills. With professional coaches, top-of-the-line equipment, and a focus on fun, Wrestle 4 Fun is set to impact the lives of low-income youth.

Making a difference with Wrestle 4 Fun:

The Wrestle 4 Fun program offers a holistic approach to youth development, targeting the body and the mind. Our evidence-based curriculum encompasses physical literacy through wrestling drills, games, and experiential learning activities that enhance social-emotional skills and promote resiliency.

From October 2023 to June 2024, Beat the Streets will conduct two 20-week programs consisting of 1.5-hour classes held twice a week. Students will learn the fundamentals of wrestling and acquire valuable tools and strategies to improve goal setting, stress management, decision-making, healthy relationships, emotional well-being, self-leadership, and critical thinking.

Building a strong community network:

Beat the Streets extends its gratitude to Flemington Public School and Principal Angila Roopnarine for their invaluable support. The past successes of our Wrestle 4 Fun project at Flemington Public School have led to the organization of a Wrestle 4 Fun family day, where parents actively participated in the activities. Such partnerships within the community are integral to providing quality support and ensuring that low-income children have all the resources they need to succeed and lead healthy, active lives.

Celebrating impact with Nike:

Recently, Nike held its inaugural NCIF Grantee Celebration at their headquarters. Founder John Park, Program Coordinator Kathy Khoa, and Executive Assistant Arely Torales were overwhelmed by the inspiring individuals they encountered. We thank Nike for this opportunity to collaborate and create a lasting impact on youth in our community. Check out this awesome video by Kathy Khoa on her experience at the event.
