Summer Job Welcome from Simi!

Simi Here!

I am so excited for another season of warm weather and meaningful work here at Beat the Streets (BTS). This blog is my official introduction for my 9-week position as a Program Coordinator for BTS. As a longstanding member of the BTS community, I am really looking forward to supporting all of their impact driven work and learning even more about non-profits.

Many Thanks

First and foremost, I would like to thank Canada Summer Jobs for the continuous funding they offer to BTS that supports this position and others in the Work It program. Their generosity aids me and other youth as we strive to give back to our communities and develop into young professionals.

More About Me

Hello! 👋🏾

I first got involved with Beat the Streets at their community wrestling practices in 2017. I was looking for a way to continue improving during the high school off-season and ended up as part of a community of amazing people. I have been continuing my wrestling journey at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON where I study Engineering Physics. This past year has been significant for me as I continue to grow in athletic, academic, and personal ways. Apart from achieving my best academic year yet and working as a Teaching Assistant, I won gold at the OUA Wrestling Championships and was the first woman from McMaster to do so since 2007. Most importantly, I helped in creating a team environment that is supportive and fun!

Summer Outlook

As Program Coordinator, I will have the opportunity to learn valuable skills while supporting students in the Work It program. My major project for the summer is creating an evaluation plan for the effectiveness of the Work It Program. This will entail research, tool creation, interviews, creativity, and a lot of learning! I’m looking forward to getting involved in such a hands-on way and am sure my experience will be positive.

Thanks again to Canada Summer Jobs and to all the great people I will be working with this summer.

More from me soon,

Simi
