What is it Like Working Remotely at Beat the Streets?
For us, Tarleen and Tarnpreet working on the social media team remotely has been very handy as everything we need is at our fingertips. Our leaders, coach Neal and Jessica have daily meetings at permanent times so we wake up accordingly to attend them. Jessica does a great job of assigning us a sufficient amount of work throughout the week so that we can complete the tasks yet also challenge ourselves. Jessica and Coach Neal host meetings across the week to check-in and see how we are doing and answer any pressing questions. We are enjoying this experience and job, we are learning and developing our skills every day and we love the opportunity to work with our team members. We also appreciate that all our co-workers are also wrestlers and we know them well. Some challenges that come with working remotely are getting in contacting our work members as not everyone’s active online at the same time. It can also feel as if we’re just doing work on a computer as opposed to being able to interact and chat with our co-workers and friends. We feel like the real-life experience would have allowed us to get a feel for a different environment and experience. We would have been able to work and communicate with our co-workers face-to-face and be able to experience the actual situations in person like waking up earlier, having to dress in proper attire, etc. Our reduced supervision and direction do occasionally result in slight procrastination. We live in a family of 7 so often we deal with interruptions and distractions which is somewhat challenging. We keep consistent work hours that we record and stick to a manageable schedule. Working online is very convenient as everything is easily accessible. Although we are not able to socially interact Zoom meetings are very advantageous. Our meetings and workday begin at 10 am but we decide the times to work on our weekly assignments which is nice. Overall, working remotely has its challenges but for the most part, very grateful to have the job and it stills comes with some advantages.
Simi, on the research team, says that “My experience working remotely with Beat the Streets has been very positive thus far! I feel immensely grateful for the opportunity to create work that is meaningful from the comfort of my own home. Working from home creates a lot of leniency in the times I can choose to get things done and increases my ability to work things around my schedule. One challenge I have found is regulating my tasks and myself to make sure that I stay as efficient and organized as possible. With a lack of people physically around me, it is up to me to stay in charge of myself. If I had to change anything, it would be having a peer accountability partner. I think having a co-worker who I stayed honest with about what I'm getting done would increase my productivity while not being as intimidating as reporting to a supervisor.”
Stone on the finance team, explains that “My experience with Beat the Streets has been amazing. I was taught how to work with grants, donations, and was able to improve my writing skills a lot. Being able to work with a team full of wrestlers was very welcoming and also productive. Our bosses are hard on us but it only makes me want to work harder and do better at the job. Overall this summer job has been great, I have loved it and hope to do it again.”
Christelle on the social media team, says that “My experience on working remotely hasn't been the most fun thing because we're inside all the time, and there's like no real human interaction so it kinda doesn't feel like work but I'm adjusting.”
Tyler on the social media team explains that, “My experience of working from home has been good as it has given me the opportunity to learn and get new skills while also being able to enjoy my summer."
